Styles of Indian Art

Major styles of Indian painting...

Mughal painting developed in the courts of Mughal Empire emerged from Persian miniature painting, with Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist influences.

Rajput painting developed in courts of Rajaputana, flowing from the style of Mughal painting.

Tanjore painting developed in Tanjavur, patronised by the Nayakas. Tanjore paintings are known for their beauty and relief work with semi-precious stone embedded, and adorned with gold foil.

Mysore painting developed in the courts of Vijayanagar kings  Mysore paintings are known for their elegance, muted colours, and attention to detail.

Warli painting  is art of tribe called Warli or Adivasis, living in Mountainous as well as coastal areas of Maharashtra Gujarat border. The art work is unique with animistic beliefs, life, customs and traditions.

Kalighat painting originated at Kalighat Kali Temple, Kalighat, Kolkata, Bengal. They are items of souvenir taken by the visitors over a period of time developed their own style.

Kerala mural paintings are patronized by the kings, these painting are on the temple walls.

Madhubani painting or Mithila painting is a style of Indian painting, practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar state. Painting is characterized by eye-catching geometrical patterns.

Pattachitra painting refers to the folk painting of Odisha, in the eastern region of India. Characterized by painting on the cloth, 'Patta' in Sanskrit means cloth  and 'chitra' means paintings.  

Modern Indian painting Modern Indian art movement in Indian painting is consider to have begun in Calcutta. A reaction to the Western influence led to a revival in primitivism, called as the Bengal school of art, which drew from the rich cultural heritage of India. It was succeeded by the Santiniketan school, led by Rabindranath Tagore's harking back to idyllic rural folk and rural life.
